Why Bother With SEO?
Optimising a website for the search engines is the technique of ensuring that a site has good, clean code, interesting content, valuable relevant inbound links, pages that contain your business' important key phrases etc. A site built or updated to implement solid SEO principles, can be visible at the top of literally millions of search queries for any search topic. With the advent of PPC or 'Paid Search', gone are the days of paying for an advert that costs a great deal of money, regardless of whether anyone even sees your add, let alone acts upon it. The miracle of PPC is that you only pay for the advertising if someone clicks your advert and visits your website. Now that's efficient marketing!
As your ranking on the paid search engine (see image) is decided by a keyword bidding system, the whole process can be seen as a 'black art' by newcomers and costly mistakes can be made.
If you don't know your 'broad match' from your 'exact match', or your 'Google slap' from your 'CTR'... you'll probably end up paying way over the odds for your PPC campaign. Unfortunately, novices can get seriously stung using PPC.
PPC is Instant!
The great appeal of PPC is that it's instant. You can build a campaign and be ranking top of the paid search engine immediately, but unfortunately most novices pay way too much per click due to a poorly structured campaign with poorly written ads. Google for example penalise poor campaigns by upping that campaigns click prices. This can be seen as a punishment though I like to view this as a good way of encouraging businesses to sort out their useless campaign.
